Private School Systems...

Private and Parochial Schools in Fayette County

While there are many excellent educational opportunities available in the public school system, many parents choose to send their children to private or parochial schools, which offer special programs or special emphases, such as Bible study or performing arts. Fayette County's 13 private and parochial schools enroll more than 4,000 students. We have included information about several of Lexington's bigger private schools.

The Lexington School
1050 Lane Allen Rd. • 278-0501

The Lexington school, founded in 1959, is a private coed school for preschool through 9th grade. The school stresses a traditional curriculum with a fine-arts and performing-arts component. Small, self-contained classes and a 13,000-volume automated library are among the strong points of the school. The Lexington School  fields interscholastic soccer, basketball and tennis teams, and the athletic program has a no-cut policy, which means everybody gets the chance to play. In the upper school (grades 7 through 9) the course of study is high school and college preparatory, with lab-based science courses and sequential courses in art, music and drama. The school enrolls about 485 students, and testing is required for admission.

Bluegrass Baptist School

About 190 students attend Bluegrass Baptist, which was established in 1969 for preschool through 12th grade education. The school offers a traditional curriculum with a Christian emphasis. An interview is usually required prior to admission.

Lexington Catholic High School
2250 Clays Mill Rd. • 277-7183

With an enrollment of 580 students, Lexington Catholic ranks as the  largest of Lexington's private and parochial schools. Open to students in grades 9 through 12, the school stresses a precollege curriculum. Freshmen are required to take a placement test. Interscholastic  sports, such as basketball and soccer, and other extracurricular activities play a big role in students' lives. The school was established in 1951.

Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary
2501 Clays Mill Rd. • 277-3030

Established in the early 1960s, Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary serves students in kindergarten through the 8th grade. Nearly 500 students are enrolled, mainly from  parish families.

 The Lexington Christian Academy
570 Delzan Place. • 223-8502

Lexington Christian Academy stresses a strong academic curriculum combined with a spiritual perspective. Bible-based principles are incorporated into the entire academic experience for students in preschool through 12th grade. As for extracurricular activities, students can participate in basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, golf and swimming. Students attend a  weekly chapel service and follow a strict dress code. Lexington Christian Academy's high school students moved into a new $10 million building in early 1999. Other students attend classes at different locations in the Lexington area.

Trinity Christian Academy
3900 Rapid Run Rd. • 271-0079

Trinity Christian Academy, established in 1988, offers students in kindergarten through the 9th grade a classical Bible-based Christian education. They will be  adding a 10th grade in 2000-2001 school year.  An interview and testing are required for admission. After school activities includes basketball, soccer, golfing, track. 

Sayre School
194 N. Limestone St. • 254-1361

Established in Lexington in 1854, Sayre School is one of the oldest  schools in the Southeast. Since its inception, Sayre has continued to cement its reputation as one of the finest coeducational college preparatory schools in the area. About 600 students attend Sayre in  programs from pre-school (age three) to senior high.

 Sayre students receive a well-rounded education that emphasizes college preparation but also includes athletics, fine arts and community service. Students are actively involved in community service projects at the middle and upper school levels.

Small class  size, Honors and Advanced Placement classes, individual attention and an open athletic policy that ensures all children can participate in athletics are just a few of the things that make Sayre special.

Sayre School has a selective admissions policy.  Appointments for screenings are arranged after an application is received.
